Alma Cooper: A Beacon of Inspiration – Miss Michigan USA 2024

Alma Cooper’s ascent to Miss Michigan USA 2024 is a narrative of resilience and empowerment. As the daughter of a migrant farmworker mother, her story is not just about personal achievement; it’s a beacon for those who dare to dream beyond their circumstances.

The coronation took place on a day of heartfelt significance—April 21, the day before the anniversary of her grandmother’s passing. Her grandmother’s memory was cherished throughout the entire competition, symbolized by the pendant she wore close to her heart.

For those fortunate enough to witness the event, many would say that it was her onstage question and response that won her the competition.

Alma was asked a poignant question: “Do people’s social class affect their goals?”

Her response was heartfelt and resolute: “Not at all. My mother is my inspiration. She grew up as a migrant worker, from the age of six in the fields of Idaho. She has never allowed her circumstances to define her destiny. Standing here as a West Point graduate in the top five percent of my class, I’m incredibly inspired by my mother’s service and how she has led. As her daughter, I can say that you should never let anyone’s limits define you because the only limits that you can place on yourself are the ones which you accept.”

At age 22, Alma is a U.S. Army officer and a scholar, holding a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from West Point and pursuing a master’s in data science at Stanford University as a Knight-Hennessy Scholar.  Her role as brigade adjutant at West Point, where she implemented accountability systems for over 4,400 cadets, showcases her leadership skills. Alma’s recognition with the Mathematical Association of America’s Janet Liou-Mark Award underscores her contributions to mathematics research and education.

Alma’s success is a testament to the idea that one’s origin does not limit their potential. Her mother’s journey from the fields of Idaho to seeing her daughter crowned Miss Michigan USA 2024 is a powerful example of transcending social barriers.

This August, Alma is set to represent the Great Lakes State on the national stage at the Miss USA 2024 pageant in Hollywood, California.
